Dear Friends,

The 4th Annual Waeger C.U.P. is right around the corner.  I can’t believe it’s been 4 years!!  Please see the attached registration form at the bottom of this page.

The tournament is Sunday, October 26th starting at 11:00am.   Thanks to our sponsors and to everyone last year (over 120 golfers) for making it a huge success.

Almost 3 years have passed since my diagnosis on May 18, 2005.  I remember on that day not knowing a single person diagnosed with cancer, let alone what the word “cancer” meant.  The only thing I did know was that I could do 1 of 2 things:  1) feel sorry for myself or 2) stand up and fight...........I knew I had no choice but to fight.

Fast forward to 2008.  The news a few weeks ago regarding a change in treatment was discouraging, but with Meghan, my family, friends, co-workers and EVERYONE commenting in the BLOG reminding us that it will be just a bump in the road has been incredible.  We will beat this together!

However, this tournament is not about my personal fight, but the 65,000+ young adults who get diagnosed with cancer every year.  In contrast to those younger and older, survival rates for young adults have not increased since 1975, possibly due to factors such as lack of insurance, less participation in clinical trials and delayed diagnoses.

In addition, young survivors often are caught between the worlds of pediatric and adult oncology. They may face a variety of unique long-term effects that will need to be addressed over their lifetimes, such as: re-entry into school or the workforce, insurance coverage issues, infertility as a result of treatment, debilitating side-effects or secondary malignancies.

The proceeds from the Waeger C.U.P. and your donations provide deserving young adults fighting cancer with $1,000 scholarships to stay in school!  These students have displayed bravery, determination, and unwavering faith in their fight against cancer.  Their winning attitudes are infectious and their stories are inspiring.  Reading the applications is both sad and rewarding at the same time. It is sad to hear so many personal struggles and know that there are so many other young adults facing a tough diagnosis in cancer.  Last year, very few applicants were diagnosed with an early stage cancer, and over 25% were diagnosed stage IV, jut like myself.  Their situations are dire, yet it is so rewarding and inspiring to see their displays of strength, determination, and  "will win" attitudes through such a trying time.

There are two ways to register for the golf tournament:  1) Fill out the form and mail it with a check or 2) Pay by credit card by making an online donation and send me an email with your information.

We need your support!  Please pass this along to all your friends and family. No donation is too small and each goes a long way to directly impacting the life of a young adult survivor.

Thank you for all your support over the past three years!  Please try to get your money and registration forms in by October 15th.

Livestrong,

Dan Waeger

When you hear those 3 famous words - "You have cancer" - your life is never the same. Nearly 4,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with cancer everyday. For survivors and their family and friends, a cancer diagnosis is scary, sad, and daunting - but not hopeless. While our lives may have changed for better or for worse, they are lives that still need to be lived, and in our minds, they are lives worth living.
